United Plantations certified despite gross violations of RSPO standards

December 2, 2008

As the palm oil industry celebrates the first RSPO-certified “sustainable” palm oil shipment to European markets this week, Greenpeace research shows that the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification is little more than greenwash. The company receiving the certification - United Plantations, a supplier of companies such as Nestlé and Unilever - is violating RSPO rules and destroying vulnerable peatland forests of Kalimantan in Indonesia. These findings underscore the need for more aggressive action by the RSPO and other palm oil producing and consuming companies. Greenpeace is calling for a moratorium on further rainforest and peatland destruction for palm oil plantations.
