WASHINGTON DC (January 13, 2023)– Annie Leonard has decided to transition out of her role as the co-Executive Director at Greenpeace USA, effective April 1, 2023.
Annie Leonard said: “My sadness at leaving this incredibly meaningful role is offset by the happiness I feel at the unanimous decision of the Boards of Directors of Greenpeace Fund and Greenpeace Inc to confirm Ebony Twilley Martin’s continued role as Executive Director of our incredible organization. I have worked hand in hand with Ebony as co-ED for 1.5 years, learned to seek out Ebony’s advice and, more importantly, to follow it!
“Over the past 8+ years, Ebony has been a courageous, consistent, reliable, visionary, strategic and honest thought partner and leader at Greenpeace and I can not think of a better choice for someone to lead this organization into its next phase of work.”
Ebony Twilley Martin said: “I want to acknowledge and thank Annie for her transformational leadership and work over these last 8 years. Annie’s work has positioned GPUSA well for the work ahead as we remain unwavering in our hope and will continue to be relentless in our pursuit of justice and liberation, especially for the communities most impacted by the joint crises in our climate and our democracy. Greenpeace USA is already a powerhouse environmental campaigning organization, and my priority is to make it an even more culturally competent one. I’m absolutely honored to be a part of this organization.”
Annie Leonard began her Greenpeace USA journey in 1989 as an intern and came back to Greenpeace as the co-Executive Director in 2014. She has helped the organization inspire and mobilize millions of people to take action to create a more sustainable future together. Working tirelessly to empower people and communities to fight for a more sustainable future, she was also the creator of The Story of Stuff. The film blossomed into The Story of Stuff Project, and built a community of over half a million people. The Story of Stuff Videos have been viewed over 40 million times and been incorporated into countless school and faith curricula.
