WASHINGTON DC (May 31, 2023)–In response to the debt ceiling deal passing the House, Alice Madden, Policy and Political Director at Greenpeace USA, said, “Speaker McCarthy and the House GOP were willing to threaten a catastrophic default in order to continue a cycle of exploitation against the working class and families trying to make ends meet. In exchange, their demands include gutting bedrock environmental protections in order to fast track fossil fuel projects with little oversight. No community should be forced to sacrifice their health and safety. Further, none of these provisions even belong in must-pass legislation meant to raise the debt ceiling.
“House extremists knew these reckless policies would crash and burn on their own. Now they are using bullying tactics to force their agenda into this critically important legislation. And they are willing to tank the entire American economy if they don’t get their way. It is clear that the GOP doesn’t care about reducing the national debt – or protecting Americans – they only care about being faithful minions to their oil and gas funders. It is now up to the Senate to reject this dirty deal and pass a clean debt ceiling bill.”
