ABC News Investigates Dangerous Oil Refineries

Last night ABC World News with Diane Sawyer and Nightline featured their investigation with the Center for Public Integrity on dangerous oil refineries that threaten millions with toxic hydrofluoric acid.

ABC’s investigation not only reveal what we and our labor  and environmental  coalition have been saying for years, but also highlighted the impact this has on local communities. No one deserves to live in fear of a poison gas disaster from these 50 refineries or the other over 400 chemical facilities that together put 110 million people at risk. ABC’s Brian Ross also questions Charles Drevna, the President of the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association who can’t defend the poor safety record of refineries around the country.

The Center for Public Integrity goes more in depth on their web site, including an interactive map that shows where the 50 dangerous refineries are located.

These refineries have safer alternatives that the industry has refused to use, it’s time Congress enacted comprehensive chemical security legislation.
