Washington DC (September 9, 2022)–Today, Representative Raúl Grijalva of Arizona unveiled a letter signed by over 70 members of Congress who are working to protect the health of communities by opposing Senator Manchin and Schumer’s Dirty Deal that would fast track approvals for oil, gas, and coal projects.
In response to Rep. Grijalva’s letter, Greenpeace USA co-Executive Director Ebony Twiller Martin said: “Over 70 members of Congress are fighting this audacious attempt to trade our lives for Big Oil profits. Let’s be perfectly clear, Manchin and Schumer’s Dirty Deal would allow the oil and gas industry which is responsible for over 1 in 5 premature deaths to fast track projects that could contaminate more air, water, and land — especially in Alaska, Appalachia, West Texas, New Mexico, and the Gulf Coast. It also wants to silence any voices that dare to stand against them by gutting environmental reviews and public comments. These are some of the only ways our communities can make our voices heard when coal, oil, and gas projects threaten our health, lands, and waters. This is not permitting reform, it is a straight-up giveaway to Big Oil.
“Attempting to include this Dirty Deal in the Continuing Resolution is an underhanded and undemocratic attempt to circumvent voters and hold hostage any elected official who dares oppose this deal. Congress should pass a Continuing Resolution free of this Dirty Deal.”
