While recovery efforts continue one month after the earthquake in Japan, the government is investing much of its resources in the disaster unfolding at the Fukushima reactors. After calls from Greenpeace to expand the evacuation zone, the government did just that today.
The Japanese people, on the other hand, aren’t sitting idly by as the government struggles to contain the nuclear disaster. Over 17,000 people took part in demonstrations throughout Tokyo today, calling for “No More Fukushimas” and an end to nuclear power.
Here in the US, we had some good news on Friday on the proposed new reactor at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant in Maryland. The NRC ruled that UniStar does not meet legal requirements because it is wholly owned by a foreign company, France’s EDF, and therefore is unable to receive a license to build the reactor. Calvert Cliffs was supposed to be one of the first reactors built during the so-called “nuclear renaissance,” and hopefully it will be one of the many cancelled projects in the years to come.
