Arla Foods: stop your greenwashing! Sustainability needs to be more than just a slogan!

I demand that Arla Foods – the world’s fifth largest dairy company – move from being a greenwashing giant to taking responsibility for its climate pollution. As a global dairy producer, Arla Foods has a huge impact on the climate of our entire planet. If it begins to take the climate crisis seriously and works to reduce their methane emissions, they could go from climate villains to heroes. It’s time for Arla Foods to rise to the climate challenge and ACT NOW.

Arla foods: People want serious action on climate!

DID YOU KNOW: that Arla Foods spends many millions on efforts to brand themselves as sustainable? At the same time, its methane emissions exceed those of the entire agricultural sector of the Netherlands.

INVESTIGATION: Our report reveals the truth behind Arla Foods’ carefully curated facade: greenwashing, unreachable climate goals, and – according to its own farmers as well as documents – secret lobbying to counteract environmental regulations and halt the transformation needed in our food system.

This is not sustainability. This is not corporate responsibility. It’s time for a change, and we can bring it about together.

5 things Arla Foods is keeping from the public, in our new report – “Dairytales

(It fails to listen to farmers, and its small farmers are systematically disadvantaged)

(according to an analysis drawing on the UN’s expert panel on net-zero commitments)

(reliance on false solutions, failure to achieve its goals, lack of transparency and accountability in reporting on its climate work)

(extensive lobbying on national as well as EU levels, with the help of industry bodies and infamous PR companies linked to fossil fuels)

(a history of misleading promotional claims, including one conviction in court for misleading the public in Sweden in 2023)

To the public, Arla foods presents a carefully curated image: pastoral landscapes and blue skies mixed with pictures of cute cows and their devoted caretakers, the farmers. This romanticised picture fails to capture Arla’s efforts to promote industrial-scale agriculture at the expense of smaller farms.
It is also difficult to reconcile with the fact that Arla Foods will most likely fail to achieve its own internal climate goals.

Arla Foods: behind the greenwashing

Our new report Dairytales (a title that refers to the fantastical stories that Arla Foods promotes about themselves) uncovers how Arla Foods – the world’s fifth largest dairy company – uses greenwashing to lure consumers and politicians to believe in their overly optimistic fairytales.

Arla’s goal is to make the public believe that their products are not harmful to the environment, the climate, animals, and small-scale farmers, a story that is far from the truth. Arla Foods is well aware of its own climate impact, as well as its potential to make a real difference, but it puts profits before our planet. The time has come to raise our voices and demand a change!

Even though Arla Foods claims to be serious in their climate commitments, its own climate goals fail to live up to the basic UN recommendations for credible climate targets. Arla Foods is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases within food production.
