Standing up for Whales! #IWC2012

Greetings from Panama City! I’m here with Greenpeace oceans campaigners from all over the world to attend the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meetings and deliver your messages to save the whales.

Over 50,000 of you took action, asking President Obama’s US delegation to take the lead in establishing a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic.

Many of you donated to the cause, which got the attention of the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. This year, Antigua and Barbuda will support Japan yet again and vote in favor of whale slaughter, on the stance that support for Japanese whaling does not affect marine life. But thanks to our your signatures and donations, there’s a spotlight on the Prime Minister.

I went to my first US delegation meeting yesterday, which consisted of the US delegation for the IWC and other NGOs. The US delegation updated us on all of the information they received in the private commission meetings that have been happening all week. As you may already know, the IWC will meet privately the week before the “official” week of meetings begins, which is next week. NGOs are not allowed to attend the private meetings, so things can be decided without public participation!

Feel free to follow our updates on our IWC 2012 homepage. I will also be live tweeting via @greenpeaceusa. You can follow us there or #IWC2012 for the entire conversation. I also started an IWC 2012 tumblr, and will be posting updates and photos there. Keep in touch!
